Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the formation of a High-Level Technical Committee to oversee ongoing negotiations aimed at attracting strategic investment into South Sudan’s petroleum sector.

The directive follows a briefing held on Wednesday, April 23, 2026, regarding the outcome of recent engagements in Kuala Lumpur, where South Sudanese officials met with a Malaysian oil company to explore investment opportunities. Discussions included the potential acquisition of shares in oil assets previously owned by Petronas.

Officials confirmed notable progress, including the signing of an Offer and Acceptance Agreement in Kuala Lumpur. In response, the President authorized the Ministry of Petroleum and Nile Petroleum Corporation to undertake comprehensive due diligence and advance the process.

President Kiir emphasized that all prospective investments must generate tangible economic benefits, enhance local participation, and fully comply with principles of transparency and accountability.

These engagements form part of broader national efforts to strengthen technical capacity, improve operational efficiency, and attract credible investors to increase oil production. The process remains at the negotiation stage, with further consultations expected as proposals are reviewed in alignment with national priorities
