South Sudan’s Former First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, has paid tribute to veteran liberation leader General Joseph Lagu, describing him as an iconic figure who championed peace and self-determination for Southern Sudan.

Machar delivered his condolence message on Wednesday while appearing in court alongside seven other SPLM/A-IO leaders and members facing charges linked to the March 2025 clashes in Nasir.

Speaking from the dock, Machar expressed regret that his detention limited his ability to convey condolences to Lagu’s family in person.

“I am in a cell, so I do not know how best to convey my condolences on the passing of a great leader, Hon. Joseph Lagu,” Machar said.

He praised Lagu for his contribution to the liberation struggle and his commitment to the welfare of the people, noting that the veteran leader was not driven by personal ambition or greed for power.

Machar also commended Lagu for handing over leadership to another person who was not originally part of the liberation movement, describing the decision as a demonstration of his selflessness.

“He is a true, iconic leader known for his dedication to the welfare of the people of South Sudan. He will always be remembered,” Machar said.

He concluded his message by praying for the peaceful rest of Lagu’s soul.

General Joseph Lagu, a prominent military officer, politician and diplomat, led the Anyanya One movement during the first Sudanese civil war and became a key figure in the struggle for Southern Sudan’s self-determination.

Lagu’s death has prompted tributes from South Sudanese leaders and citizens, reflecting his enduring place in the country’s liberation history.
