UN Official Wraps Up Visit to South Sudan, Reaffirms Commitment to Support Elections

A senior UN official Jean-Pierre Lacroix, USG for UN Peace Operations concluded a visit to South Sudan, highlighting the UN’s continued commitment to supporting the country as it navigates its transitional period and works towards holding elections by December 2026. 

During the visit, which included stops in Port Sudan, Juba, Abyei, and Aweil, the official met with key leaders, including President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar, as well as various cabinet ministers and Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel.

The purpose of the visit was to reinforce the UN’s ongoing support amidst South Sudan’s challenges, including the economic and humanitarian crisis, rising insecurity, and the impact of the Sudanese conflict.

The UN official emphasized the importance of collaboration between South Sudanese authorities and the international community to ensure effective resource mobilization for the country’s recovery and peace efforts.

The Jean-Pierre Lacroix, also discussed the ongoing implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, the need for political consensus, and the critical goal of holding credible elections in 2026. 

In addition, there were discussions about the situation in Abyei, including intercommunal tensions and the influence of the Sudanese conflict, with an emphasis on the importance of dialogue and trust-building among local communities.

Reaffirming the UN’s commitment, the official assured that global attention would remain focused on South Sudan’s progress towards lasting peace.
