The Commissioner of Nzara County, Honourable Lino Futaki Kuago, reported on Thursday the tragic death of a 24-year-old man, who was suspected of theft, at the hands of community police in Nzara County, Western Equatoria State.

According to Commissioner Futaki, the incident occurred after a break-in, during which several items were stolen. The community police arrested the young man, identified as Justin, who was residing at a woman’s house in the At Labara area of Nzara County.

Despite there being no solid evidence linking him to the crime, Justin was brutally beaten by the community police, resulting in his death.

Commissioner Futaki expressed deep concern over the actions of the community police, highlighting the serious shortcomings in their training. “Community police were formed across South Sudan to handle minor offenses like theft and rape.

However, due to a lack of proper training, they have overstepped their roles and taken on duties beyond their mandate,” he said. Futaki condemned the excessive use of force and called for immediate reform, stating that such practices are intolerable.

“The government has arrested six individuals, including members of the community police, in connection with the beating. They are currently under investigation, and those responsible for this killing will be held accountable,” Futaki assured.

He emphasized that the proper handling of suspects, including arrest, interrogation, and detention, falls under the jurisdiction of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and trained police officers, not community police.

He called on all community police units in Nzara County and Western Equatoria State to strictly follow legal procedures when dealing with suspects.

In his concluding remarks, Commissioner Futaki addressed the youth of the state, urging them to engage in respectful, lawful activities and steer clear of criminal behavior.

“My message to the youth is clear: avoid crime and focus on building a better future for yourselves and your community,” he advised.
