King Atoroba Peni Rikito Gbudue of the Azande Kingdom has issued a heartfelt appeal to farmers in Western Equatoria State, urging them to prioritize food security over the sale of agricultural products, particularly for non-essential items such as alcohol.

In a press statement delivered from the Royal Palace, King Atoroba acknowledged the hard work of local farmers but questioned the types of food being sold in the markets.

“I am pleased to see the dedication of our farmers in producing food, but we must ensure that our food remains for the benefit of our families and communities. The priority should be sustenance, not just sales,” he emphasized.

King Atoroba advised farmers to establish two separate farms—one for personal consumption and the other for commercial purposes—to ensure that food remains available for local households. He also encouraged community members, both young and old, to remain productive and avoid idleness.

“Parents should ensure that while their children engage in boda boda [motorcycle taxi] activities, they also dedicate time to farming,” the King added.

To strengthen local agriculture, King Atoroba recommended the cultivation of commercial crops such as coffee, guava, lemon, and groundnuts, alongside staple foods like cassava. He also urged those with financial resources to invest at least 10% of their wealth in agriculture, to promote sustainable development and diversify income.

The King highlighted the example of Mr. Gabi Tourist, a local leader who has established extensive farms in Gangura, as a model for others to follow.

Additionally, he encouraged young people still living with their parents to start their farms and work towards independence.

In closing, King Atoroba called for peace and unity across Western Equatoria State, emphasizing that only through hard work, knowledge, and wisdom can the community achieve prosperity.

His comments come at a time when food prices in the region have spiked, with a gallon of groundnuts now selling for 4,000 South Sudanese pounds due to increased demand. King Atoroba delivered his remarks during a media briefing at his residence in Yambio on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
