Yambio, Thursday, September 5, 2024 – Hundreds of young people from various Payams and Bomas in Yambio County have graduated with certificates in vocational training, equipping them with vital skills for self-employment and economic empowerment.
The graduation ceremony, held in Yambio, was graced by the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports for Western Equatoria State, Mr. David Simbi, who encouraged the graduates to apply their newfound skills in their communities. He emphasized the significance of maintaining the tools provided during the training, urging the graduates to make the most of their opportunities.
“I appeal to the Ministry of Education to continue supporting our youth, just as my ministry is committed to being close to them,” said Mr. Simbi.
Mr. Robert Singira, the branch manager of the Red Cross in Western Equatoria State, commended the graduates and called on the State Revenue Authority to be mindful of the financial burdens on young entrepreneurs. He urged the authorities not to impose excessive taxes on youth-led businesses, recognizing the importance of supporting them in their entrepreneurial ventures.
“Our key role as the Red Cross is to empower women and youth, fostering sustainable development and improved livelihoods,” Mr. Singira added.
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Torosa Elias Toro, Deputy Commissioner of the State Revenue Authority, congratulated the graduates, encouraging them to put their business skills into practice. He noted that the Red Cross, alongside the South Sudanese government, had not only provided them with certificates but also the tools necessary for their professional journeys.
Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Mr. Jackson Gaaniko Mathew, Head Boy of Tiindoka Vocational Training, expressed gratitude to the South Sudan Red Cross and the Western Equatoria State government for their continued support. He urged both organizations to extend such opportunities to more young people across the state.
“This initiative is vital for reducing poverty, preventing early marriages, and curbing theft, laziness, and idleness in our community,” Jackson said.
He further encouraged his fellow graduates to remain dedicated to their work. “As we graduate today, let’s go back to our communities and use the skills and tools we’ve received to create a brighter future. Let’s not sell the tools for quick cash but rather use them to build our lives,” he advised.
The vocational training program brought together 100 youths from Yambio Town Municipality, Bangasu Payam, Kasia, Burezigbo, Lii Rangu, and Saura, equipping them with skills in various trades to foster self-reliance and community development.
