A paramount Chief of Leer County Stephen Kuong Mabil Pan has expressed concerns about what he perceives as targeted actions against his community by the previous leadership of Unity State.
He has called on the newly appointed Governor, Justice Riek Bim, to focus on promoting fairness and equal treatment among all communities in the state.
Chief Kuong’s appeal came during a visit by the Dok community in Bentiu to the Governor of Unity State, over the weekend. The chief highlighted that his area has been repeatedly destroyed during conflicts, with youth allied to the government involved in these attacks, which he views as evidence of unfair treatment.
“We, the people of Leer, are not known for quarreling, and historically, Koch, Mayendit, and Payinjiar were once part of Leer. Leer has always been the meeting point for Southern Unity.”
“You, as our leader, need to work hard to bring us together and unite us as one. Let us be known as the sons and daughters of Bentiu. As the leader for everyone, we look to you to solve our problems,” Kuong said.
The chief called on the Governor to promote forgiveness among the people, emphasizing that while not everyone is familiar with the law, it is the leader’s responsibility to guide the people in the right direction.
Chief Kuong emphasized that leadership should strive to improve the state and serve all citizens equally, without favoring one community over another.
“Leadership comes from God, and you must alleviate suffering. I have been forced to flee to the rivers many times, and I do not understand what I did wrong. All these people are my children. This should end under your leadership,” he stated.
In response, Governor Justice Riek Bim pledged to visit Leer County and promised to ensure equal treatment for all communities. He also committed to promoting the rule of law and holding accountable those who have committed crimes.
