South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, convened a significant meeting in his office to discuss a new initiative focused on promoting peace and peaceful coexistence between the communities of Unity State and the Ruweng Administrative Area.

The initiative, spearheaded by members of the National Transitional Legislative Assembly representing these regions, comes at a critical time as the communities face the dual challenges of recent devastating floods and ongoing tensions. The meeting centered on addressing these issues, with a particular emphasis on fostering peace and finding solutions to the prevailing challenges faced by the local populations.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Hon. Farouk Gatkuoth Kam, a member of the Assembly, conveyed the First Vice President’s strong support for the peace initiative. He underscored Dr. Machar’s commitment to encouraging both communities to embrace peace and work together towards reconciliation. “The discussions are crucial,” Hon. Farouk noted, “as they seek to overcome the challenges affecting the region’s communities.”

He further assured that this meeting marks the beginning of ongoing efforts, with plans to engage members of the presidency, national ministers, and the governments of Unity State and the Ruweng Administrative Area. The goal is to sustain momentum towards lasting peace and coexistence.

Dr. Machar praised the initiative, stressing the importance of engaging the “two sisterly communities” in peace efforts. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting all actions that promote reconciliation and unity, essential for the stability and development of the region.
