South Sudan is set to celebrate the historic SPLA Day anniversary on 16 May for the first time since the outbreak of the 2013 conflict between the SPLM in government and the opposition.

The SPLM Secretariat has already announced plans and preparations for the upcoming celebrations, which will take place at Juba National Stadium under the theme: “Towards a Peaceful and Prosperous South Sudan.”

President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who is also the Chairman of the SPLM Party, is expected to deliver a national address during the event.

The SPLM/SPLA Day commemorates the liberation struggle that lasted for 21 years until South Sudan gained independence in July 2011.

Speaking to journalists, the Deputy Secretary acting on behalf of the SPLM Secretary General, Cde. Amb. Jimmy Atilio, said the celebration marks an important moment for the country and the ruling party.

“The President, His Excellency the Chairman of the SPLM and President of the Republic of South Sudan, will deliver the main message to the country. He will give a national address where the vision of the country will be highlighted,” Amb. Jimmy said.

He further revealed that preparations for the celebrations will begin with the welcoming of President Salva Kiir at Juba International Airport upon his arrival from Uganda on Wednesday.

According to the SPLM Secretariat, the celebrations will include cultural performances, revolutionary songs, comedy shows, and wrestling competitions involving participants from different states.

Officials say the event is intended to promote unity, peace, and national identity while reflecting on the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle.
