Local authorities, along with the state government of Warrap State, have erected roadblocks to prevent the flow of ammunition into conflict zones, particularly Tonj North County, where recent inter-communal violence has escalated.
The area is difficult to access due to flooding, which has delayed government efforts to deploy forces and contain the fighting.
On Saturday, October 12th, approximately 20 people were killed and 38 others wounded during fierce clashes in Alabek Payam, Tonj North County. The violence erupted between two sections of the Lou Ariik community.
“There has been an ongoing conflict between these sections of Lou Ariik, and on Saturday, the violence was reignited by a man who had returned after seeking spiritual powers,” said State Information Minister William Wol Mayom.
The fighting began around 11 a.m. and continued until rain interrupted the clashes in the evening.
Wol explained that the national government is aware of the conflict but faces challenges in deploying forces due to flooded roads and inaccessibility. Despite this, strict measures are being applied on roads to prevent the smuggling of ammunition into the region.
In one instance, a vehicle carrying ammunition was intercepted and detained in Kuajok town, pending investigation. Authorities are intensifying efforts to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
