Humanitarian agencies and a government task force led by Hon. Stephen Mathiang Deng, Chairperson of the Flood Task Force and State Minister of Cabinet Affairs, visited Rumbek East on Monday to assess the severe impacts of flooding.Â
The flood has submerged large parts of the county, including the County Commissioner’s office.
Rumbek East Commissioner Hon. Mangar Machuol Malok reported that his office, households, and government facilities, such as the prison, were all severely affected. “All the inmates have been relocated to Rumbek due to the flooding,” said the Commissioner.
Hon. Mathiang noted that the assessment team, which included the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), was on-site to evaluate the areas most in need of humanitarian aid. “Our goal is to assess the situation and identify where assistance is most urgently required,” he added.
The Deputy Chairperson of the RRC, Hon. Samuel Aberic Makur, urged community leaders to identify highland areas where affected populations could be relocated to receive aid.
“Chiefs must find high ground for those displaced by the floods, so humanitarian aid can reach them effectively,” he advised.
Mr. David Lugeron, head of the Humanitarian Coordination Forum, confirmed that seven humanitarian clusters were focusing on addressing the specific vulnerabilities of the flood-affected population.
