A group of South Sudanese political and military opposition movements has announced the formation of a new unified coalition aimed at promoting federal democracy and addressing the deepening crisis in the country.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the newly formed Coalition of South Sudan Opposition Movements (CSSOM) declared its official launch, bringing together various rebel and opposition factions under a common agenda.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, CSSOM spokesperson Gen. Dickson Gatluak Jock Nyuot said the coalition seeks to advance what he called “a just and dear cause” by uniting political and military actors in a coordinated effort to challenge the current leadership in Juba.
“The leadership of CSSOM reaffirms its resolute and unwavering commitment to federal democratic principles and the inalienable right to self-determination for marginalized South Sudanese,” the statement read.
The coalition criticized what it described as ongoing dictatorship and oppression by the central government and called for the establishment of a unified front to protect civilians from persecution, displacement, and human rights violations.
“The country is witnessing unprecedented levels of displacement and injustices. We call for immediate action to safeguard our people and restore justice and dignity,” the coalition declared.
The operations of CSSOM during the interim period will be overseen by a Coalition High Executive Council (CHEC), tasked with coordinating political and military activities.
The announcement comes amid growing tensions and increasing calls for reforms in the face of political stagnation, conflict, and humanitarian challenges in South Sudan.
