Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is calling on all parties to respect and protect civilians, medical personnel, and healthcare facilities amid intensifying conflict and displacement in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State,

MSF continues to provide critical medical services in some of the last operational health facilities in the region, particularly in Ulang and Malakal. Teams there are treating increasing numbers of patients suffering from conflict-related injuries as well as a growing cholera outbreak.

“Despite the violence, many residents—including women, children, and the elderly—remain in their communities. In this context, the few functioning hospitals are a lifeline,” said Zakaria Mwatia, MSF Head of Mission in South Sudan. “It’s essential that healthcare facilities, staff, and patients are protected, and that access to medical care is not hindered.”

Since February, Ulang Hospital has treated over 430 cholera patients—despite being the only functioning facility in the area. Meanwhile, MSF teams have also provided care to more than 230 people, including many women and children, for injuries sustained in recent violence.

Across both Malakal and Ulang hospitals, more than 200 patients are currently receiving treatment. In just two weeks, MSF has delivered 240 outpatient consultations, 97 antenatal care visits, 47 emergency consultations, and assisted with 30 births.

To strengthen the cholera response, MSF is also supporting several primary healthcare centers in Doma, Mandeng, Kuich, Galachel, Baliet, and Khorfulus by supplying medical materials and training local staff.

“As a neutral and independent humanitarian organization, we provide care based solely on medical need—regardless of a patient’s background or affiliation,” Mwatia emphasized.

MSF warns that continued violence, combined with the rapid spread of cholera and lack of clean water and sanitation, is putting communities at even greater risk and exacerbating an already critical humanitarian situation.

In addition to operations in Upper Nile, MSF is also providing medical services in Renk County, the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, and multiple locations in Jonglei State, including Akobo, to support communities affected by the outbreak
