In a bid to bolster the local economy and improve food security, the Commissioner of Yei River County, Hon. Emmanuel Taban Seme, has issued a strong appeal to citizens to embrace agriculture.
During a press briefing held on Monday at the county headquarters in Yei, Commissioner Taban highlighted the urgent need for increased agricultural activities across the county.
Commissioner Taban recounted that before assuming their roles in their respective counties, the Central Equatoria State Governor, General Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani, had emphasized the critical importance of farming to the state’s overall development.
The Governor’s message underscored agriculture as a cornerstone for economic resilience and sustainability, particularly in a region where most of the population depends on subsistence farming.
In line with the Governor’s vision, Commissioner Taban reaffirmed his commitment to revitalizing and reopening cooperative societies, which have historically played a vital role in supporting farmers.
He stressed that these cooperatives would provide essential resources, including access to credit, seeds, and modern farming equipment, thereby enabling farmers to increase productivity and access broader markets.
The Commissioner urged local farmers to consider expanding their farming operations, advocating for the establishment of large-scale farms.
He pointed out that by cultivating more land and producing higher yields, farmers could generate surplus crops for sale.
The income generated from these sales, he noted, could then be used to purchase necessities, improving the overall standard of living in the community.
Commissioner Taban’s call to action comes at a crucial time as the county continues to recover from the impacts of conflict and economic challenges.
By focusing on agriculture, he believes that Yei River County can achieve greater economic independence and ensure that its citizens have a steady and reliable food supply.
The Commissioner concluded his remarks by reiterating his administration’s commitment to supporting all agricultural initiatives, promising to work closely with both local and international partners to ensure that farmers receive the necessary support to succeed.
His statements have sparked optimism among the local population, who see agriculture as a pathway to a more prosperous future.
