South Sudan’s new Minister of Health Hon. Sarah Cleto Rial has officially taken over following her swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, marking what officials have described as a new dawn for the country’s health sector.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who presided over the ceremony, directed the newly appointed minister to urgently address the longstanding challenges facing the health system. He emphasized the need for meaningful reforms and improved service delivery, describing her appointment as well-deserved.
“You have been entrusted with a vital ministry that affects the lives of our people daily,” President Kiir said. “I urge you to bring about the change we need and work to ensure better healthcare services for all South Sudanese.”
The President also used the occasion to call on citizens to reject division and support national unity and peacebuilding efforts.
Also present at the event was Interim SPLM-IO Chairman, Stephen Par Kuol, who welcomed the appointment and underscored the critical nature of the ministry. “This is a ministry of life and death,” he said. “It requires strong, committed leadership, and I believe Minister Sarah is well-positioned to lead it effectively.”
In her remarks, Minister Sarah Cleto expressed gratitude to the President and the leadership of the transitional government for the confidence placed in her. She pledged to serve with transparency, accountability, and a results-based approach.
“I am committed to delivering quality healthcare to our people and ensuring the system is responsive, efficient, and inclusive,” she said.
Government officials and observers say the appointment signals renewed efforts to revitalize the health sector, which has long struggled with underfunding, infrastructure gaps, and limited access to services—particularly in rural areas.
