The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is urgently calling for an immediate halt to all hostilities and for renewed dialogue among South Sudan’s leaders to de-escalate tensions and restore peace.

Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, emphasized the need for all parties to recommit to the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

“To prevent a relapse into civil war, it is essential that the Parties cease all hostilities, adhere strictly to the ceasefire, address grievances through dialogue, and re-establish a unified government,” Haysom stated.

The UN also urged all involved parties to take swift action to protect civilians, prevent further displacement, and honor their commitments to the ceasefire in order to avoid worsening the already dire humanitarian situation.

Recent reports indicate clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) near Rejaf, south of Juba, as well as at Wunaliet, west of the capital.

The security situation in Upper Nile remains precarious, with further mobilization of armed forces and disturbing reports of aerial bombardments targeting civilian areas. These bombings allegedly involved the use of highly flammable substances, resulting in severe casualties and horrific injuries.

Diplomatic efforts are intensifying to secure a peaceful resolution, with UNMISS working closely with national leaders and international partners, including the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), the Troika, the UN Security Council, and the AU Peace and Security Council.

“We urge the President and First Vice President to come together, address their differences, and issue a joint statement to assure the South Sudanese people of their unwavering commitment to peace,” Haysom urged. “This will demonstrate that their priority is the welfare of the people, ensuring peace and stability not only for South Sudan, but for the entire region.”
