Youths from Nzara County have taken to social media to appeal for immediate assistance for victims of severe flooding in Western Equatoria State, South Sudan.

Recent heavy rainfall caused the Yubu and Nzara Rivers to overflow, resulting in widespread flooding across the region. The area’s natural vulnerability has exacerbated the situation, leading to extensive destruction, including the loss of homes, food supplies, and other essential possessions.

Hundreds of residents, including women, children, and people living with disabilities, have been severely affected. Many families are now homeless, facing extreme hunger, and lack access to clean water and basic necessities. Vulnerable groups, particularly those with disabilities, are in desperate need of urgent assistance as they struggle to survive in the aftermath of the disaster.

The loss of homes and food stocks, coupled with the destruction of livelihoods, has plunged Nzara County into a state of emergency. Local efforts to respond to the crisis have been overwhelmed, and the humanitarian needs are immense.

Joseph Arkangelo Apai, a concerned citizen from Nzara County, is calling on the Government of South Sudan, international organizations, and national NGOs to respond swiftly. He outlined the immediate needs as follows

Temporary shelters for displaced families, with special attention to vulnerable groups such as women, children, and persons with disabilities. Food supplies and clean water to prevent hunger and the outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Medical support, including basic healthcare and disease prevention, particularly for individuals with special needs.Long-term recovery assistance to rebuild homes and restore livelihoods, helping communities recover from the loss of property and essential resources.

The scale of the disaster has left Nzara County in a critical situation, and urgent action is needed to alleviate the suffering of the affected population.
