Residents of Yambio town flooded the streets in celebration following the dismissal of Governor Alfred Futuyo Karaba, singing local songs that translate to “God didn’t forget us.”

Eyewitnesses reported large crowds gathering in various parts of the town, expressing their joy over the governor’s removal. Some sources claim that Futuyo’s residence was stormed by the crowd, forcing him to seek refuge at the UN compound for protection. However, these reports have not been independently verified.

Governor Futuyo’s removal, announced by President Salva Kiir through a presidential decree, has sparked mixed reactions across Western Equatoria.

While many residents have welcomed the decision, others have expressed concerns about the potential for political instability in the state. Some community members remain hopeful that his dismissal could pave the way for peace and stability in the region.

Authorities have yet to comment on the reported incident at Futuyo’s residence.

Last week, Governor Futuyo told the media that he has successfully led the state for five years without holding a formal academic certificate, arguing that leadership is a gift from God rather than a result of academic qualifications.

“I have led this state for five years without a certificate, yet I have outperformed those with degrees. Leadership is a gift from God, and I have demonstrated the ability to govern effectively. No governor in Western Equatoria has ever completed more than five years in office,” Futuyo said.

Governor Futuyo, who has been in office since 2020, is known for his strong stance on security and development issues in Western Equatoria.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) has condemned President Salva Kiir’s decision to remove him said the party is yet decide on his dismissal calling it a violation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.
