The Rt. Hon. Joseph Ngere Paciko is a South Sudanese political leader and lawmaker who now serves as Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, following his appointment by President Salva Kiir Mayardit in a recent presidential decree.
His elevation to the speakership marks a key leadership change in the legislative branch amid ongoing political developments in the country’s transitional governance.
Ngere Paciko represents Mundri West in Western Equatoria State in parliament, where he has been active in national legislative affairs. He was among several candidates nominated by the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement(SPLM) parliamentary caucus to replace the outgoing speaker, following a vote of no confidence against the former leadership.
Earlier in his political career, Ngere Paciko has served in significant roles at both state and national levels. He was the first and final governor of the now‑defunct Amadi State, created during a past administrative reorganization.
His experience also includes involvement in parliamentary committees, including serving on a vetting committee for presidential appointees in the National Legislative Assembly, demonstrating his engagement in legislative oversight and governance issues.
As Speaker, Joseph Ngere Paciko assumes a central role in presiding over the lower house of South Sudan’s transitional legislature a body responsible for scrutinizing government performance, approving laws and policies, and representing the voices of citizens during a crucial period of peace implementation and political transition.
His leadership now carries the task of steering parliamentary business at a time of heightened expectations for legislative accountability, cohesion, and progress in South Sudan’s evolving political landscape.
