The Vice President of South Sudan, Gen. Taban Deng Gai has made a passionate appeal to the international community to prioritize the long-neglected issue of Abyei, describing it as a humanitarian crisis in need of immediate global attention.
Speaking on the region’s plight, he emphasized that Abyei’s people have endured hardship for far too long, with minimal access to basic services such as schools, hospitals, and essential goods.
“Abyei is not just a regional concern—it’s a humanitarian crisis that requires urgent global intervention,” said VP Taban. He called on governments, regional bodies, and international organizations to intensify efforts and apply diplomatic pressure to ensure peace, stability, and development in the disputed area.
Highlighting the strategic importance of Anthony Airport, VP Taban underscored its potential as a lifeline for Abyei. He noted that the airport’s smooth operation, supporting both humanitarian and commercial flights, could facilitate aid delivery, boost economic activity, and improve regional connectivity. The airport, he argued, is vital for addressing both immediate needs and long-term development in the area.
VP Taban concluded with a call for collective action, urging stakeholders to work together with urgency and unity to restore dignity and hope to the people of Abyei. “We have a responsibility to change the narrative. Together, we must bring a brighter future to Abyei.”
