The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has expressed grave concern over recent clashes in Nassir, Upper Nile, and ongoing tensions between organized forces in Western Equatoria. These escalations have led to fatalities, property destruction, and the displacement of civilians in both regions.

Between 14-15 February, violent confrontations occurred between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and armed youth in Nassir. The fighting involved heavy weaponry, resulting in civilian casualties as well as injuries to military personnel. A pre-scheduled UNMISS patrol was also caught in the crossfire, with one peacekeeper injured during mortar shelling.

“I call on all parties involved to show restraint and restore calm without delay. I strongly condemn any violence directed at our peacekeepers, as such actions are a clear violation of international law,” said Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS.

“The escalating situation in both Upper Nile and Western Equatoria highlights the urgent need for the full and timely deployment of the Necessary Unified Forces, as outlined in the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

As South Sudan enters the fourth extension of its transitional period on 22 February, all parties must honor the Agreement and accelerate its implementation, as it remains the only viable path toward lasting peace,” SRSG Haysom added.
