Leaders of Unity State Graduates Union during the election on Saturday

The Unity State Graduates Union (USGU) has successfully elected its new leadership, with Yoal Manyang Riek emerging as the Chairperson in a closely contested election. According to the results announced by the electoral body, Yoal secured 52% of the vote, narrowly defeating his opponent, Matut Ruai Gol, who garnered 48%.

Other key positions were also filled, with Mayiel Gatkoi Chuol elected as Speaker, Michael Gatkoi W. Gatmai as Deputy Chairperson, Raan Bona as Secretary-General, and James Mayang Gai as Secretary for Finance.

Advocate Younis Kerbino Gatluit, Chairperson of the electoral committee, officially declared the results on Saturday. “I hereby declare the candidates who obtained the highest number of votes in the election, with their vote shares exceeding fifty percent of the valid votes cast,” he stated during the announcement.

John Mut Riak, the Secretary-General of the Electoral Committee, praised the graduates for conducting a peaceful and transparent election. “We appreciate the dedication of our special observers and delegates who ensured the process was free and fair. We congratulate the winners and extend special thanks to the candidates who graciously accepted the results,” he remarked.

Chairperson-Elect Yoal Manyang Riek expressed gratitude to the voters for their trust and emphasized the collective effort behind the victory.

“This win is not just about the votes counted but about the shared mission and vision for our beloved Unity State. I pledge to work tirelessly to fulfill our promises and uphold our values. Together, we will build a brighter future for the Union,” he said.

Outgoing Chairperson Dr. Teny Manong Chany acknowledged the participation of 63 delegates from seven counties in Unity State and extended his congratulations to the new leadership. 

“I commend Yoal Manyang and his team for earning the trust of our members. To those who were not elected, I encourage you to collaborate with the new leaders to achieve the objectives outlined in our constitution,” he stated.

Newly elected Speaker Mayiel Gatkoi Chuol expressed gratitude to his supporters.

“I am incredibly honored to serve as the Speaker of the Unity State Graduates Union. I am excited to work with such a passionate and talented team to foster an inclusive and dynamic environment that promotes collaboration, innovation, and growth,” he said.

The new leadership takes charge at a pivotal time, with a focus on fostering unity, driving development, and advancing the objectives of the Union. The peaceful and democratic process has been hailed as a testament to the maturity and dedication of the members of the Unity State Graduates Union.
