16 Days Activism campaign on GBV in South Sudan

The United Nations Women Organization (UN Women), in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare, held a one-day panel discussion to explore the challenges faced by South Sudanese in reporting cases of gender-based violence (GBV).

Speaking on behalf of the UN Women Country Representative, Program Specialist Korto Williams highlighted that GBV remains a significant issue in South Sudan. Nearly 50% of women experience intimate partner violence, and 25% of reported sexual violence cases involve child victims.

“In South Sudan, gender-based violence remains a critical issue, with nearly 50% of women experiencing intimate violence and 25% of reported sexual violence cases involving child victims. Floods and food insecurity have worsened conditions for women and girls,” Korto Williams stated.

She emphasized that social norms and stigma continue to hinder survivors’ access to essential services. She added, “Violence against women and girls is not just about numbers; it represents a failure to protect the rights and dignity of half the population.”

Korto also highlighted the progress made by UN Women in addressing GBV in South Sudan, including the Beijing +30 South Sudan Report, the implementation of the 35% affirmative action under the 2018 peace agreement, and the establishment of GBV shelters. Additionally, she commended the drafting of the gender-based violence bill as a significant milestone.

“These efforts underscore South Sudan’s commitment to addressing violence against women,” Korto said. However, she lamented that cultural practices and social norms continue to limit women’s access to resources, leadership opportunities, and education.

The forum brought together a diverse panel, including persons with disabilities, women in uniform, and activists advocating for an end to GBV. The event was part of South Sudan’s participation in the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

This year’s global theme, “Towards Beijing +30: UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” and South Sudan’s national theme, “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls in South Sudan,” reaffirm UN Women’s commitment to fostering safe and equitable environments for women.
