Juba—The South Sudanese Presidency, chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has officially extended the country’s transitional period by two years. This decision comes with the postponement of the national elections, initially slated for December 2024, which will now take place on December 22, 2026.

Presidential Adviser on National Security, Hon. Tut Gatluak, stated that the extension would allow the government to focus on implementing critical pending protocols outlined in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS). He highlighted key areas of concern, including the drafting of a permanent constitution, conducting a national census, and the registration of political parties.

Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, further explained that both the electoral institutions and security sectors had recommended the extension. He emphasized that vital tasks required for a smooth electoral process remain incomplete, necessitating the delay. Dr. Lomuro underscored the importance of additional time to ensure a stable and well-organized election.

Reassuring the public, Minister Lomuro stated that the government would continue to function throughout this extended period, maintaining its regular operations while the necessary preparations for the elections are completed.

The Presidency also stressed that the remaining months of the current transitional period would be used to mobilize essential funds for the full implementation of the revitalized peace agreement. Dr. Lomuro emphasized that securing these resources is crucial to achieving lasting peace and stability in South Sudan.

The decision reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that the upcoming elections are held under secure and well-prepared conditions, in line with the peace agreement’s objectives.
