Traders in the Torit market have expressed their readiness to lower the prices of goods as the South Sudanese Pound (SSP) continues to gain value against the US dollar. However, prices of vegetables remain unchanged as wholesalers have yet to reduce their rates.

Elizabeth, the chairperson of the Awara-wara traders in Torit town market, said that while they know of the dollar’s drop, they are still selling goods at previous prices because wholesale prices have not yet decreased.

“Nothing has changed for us yet. We heard that the dollar dropped to 300 SSP, but we are still selling at the old prices.

Greens are still 300 SSP, and okra is 500 SSP. We’re waiting for prices to go down at the wholesale level before we adjust,” Elizabeth explained.

She confirmed that the traders are ready to reduce prices once the wholesale rates drop.

“We are prepared to reduce prices if the wholesalers do. For now, I bought the same items at the old prices – 3,000 SSP for small polyethylene bags and 4,000 SSP for the bigger ones.

I appreciate the efforts made, whether by the government or divine intervention, to stabilize the economy because people are really struggling,” she said.

Although the prices of some commodities have decreased, vegetables continue to be sold at their previous rates.
