Authorities at Torit Central Prison in Eastern Equatoria State have raised an urgent appeal for medical supplies to treat a growing number of sick inmates.

Augustino Angelo, a representative of the prison’s Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC), revealed that no medical supplies have been received this year from either the Ministry of Health or humanitarian agencies.

“We don’t have enough drugs in the prison PHCC. Since the beginning of the year, we haven’t received anything from the Ministry of Health. We’re recording cases of malaria, typhoid, coughs, and we lack medicine for treatment. Previously, the ministry helped us.”

“We are now appealing again, especially since we have pregnant women who need midwives. We request two midwives to assist these women, and our guards are ready to work with them.”

Angelo urged the public to support inmates, emphasizing that prisoners, despite their crimes, remain part of the community and deserve compassion and care.

“Some people say there’s no need to help prisoners because they are in jail. But prisoners are your brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers. What put them in prison was their crime, but we must not abandon them.”

If you’re not visiting your loved ones in prison, it means you’re not showing the love of Jesus. Let’s support them with food, water, and care so they can return as better people and contribute positively to society.”

The appeal highlights ongoing challenges in the state’s correctional health system and calls for renewed public and institutional support
