Western Bahr el Ghazal State Police confirmed the arrest of over 25 individuals on Saturday morning, March 1st, after a brawl broke out in Wau the previous evening.
The spokesperson for the Western Bahr el Ghazal State Police, Major Santino Udwal, reported that the incident occurred around 7:00 PM on Friday, when a group of young people, known as the Niqass, organized a party at a hotel called Grass Root in the Nazareth neighborhood.
The quarrel escalated, prompting police intervention and resulting in the arrest of 26 individuals, aged between 13 and 22.
Among those arrested were 10 boys and 16 girls, all currently held in the Special Protection Unit. Police procedures are still ongoing. Santino Udwal also mentioned that illegal substances, including drugs and bongo, were found in their possession.
Santino appealed to the communities of Western Bahr el Ghazal to assist the state government in managing their children to prevent further harmful incidents.
The Director General of the Western Bahr el Ghazal Police Department, Major General Mareng Mareng, confirmed the ongoing procedures and urged parents to intervene urgently to address these troubling societal trends.
He also called on the elderly to uphold and instill local cultural values, particularly through their clothing, so that children can look up to them as role models. The increasing number of young individuals involved in such incidents highlights the growing concern over the presence of Niqass in the state.
