Tensions have escalated between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) amid growing violence in Ulang, Nasir and Baliet in Upper Nile State.

The SSPDF has accused the SPLA-IO and its allied white militias of mobilizing large forces in the region. According to SSPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, these forces initially aimed to disrupt troop rotations in Nasir but have since shifted their focus to launching large-scale attacks on civilians.

To monitor the situation, the SSPDF deployed aerial surveillance and detected two large columns of SPLA-IO forces and white militias advancing toward Gelachel and Baliet towns, displacing many civilians in the process.

“There is an immediate threat of armed confrontations between the SSPDF and the advancing enemy forces. We call on the hostile forces to halt their advance and retreat,” the SSPDF urged in a statement. “Should they fail to comply, we will be forced to take necessary military action, including pre-emptive airstrikes.”

In response, the SPLA-IO spokesperson, Col. Lam Paul Gabriel, accused the SSPDF of bombing their positions in Doma, further escalating the conflict.

“This morning at approximately 8:30 AM, the SSPDF launched an airstrike on our assembly areas in Doma Payam, Ulang County. What was supposed to be a peaceful mission to Nasir has now turned violent,” Col. Gabriel said.

As both sides continue to trade accusations, the situation in Ulang and Nasir remains tense, with concerns about further violence and the impact on local civilians. The Activist are urging State and national government to engage in dialogue and work toward de-escalation.
