Hundreds of members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) gathered in Western Equatoria for the party’s leadership restructuring.

The newly appointed leaders include chairpersons, deputies, secretaries, and representatives from the women, youth, and veterans’ leagues, who were officially sworn into their respective offices.

Regina Joseph Kaba, SPLM-IO’s Secretary General congratulated the new appointees and urged them to focus on mobilizing new members for the party.

She encouraged them to remain loyal and perform their duties in line with both party regulations and the Constitution of South Sudan.

Regina also expressed her support for the 24-month extension of the peace process but emphasized that critical provisions of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) must be implemented to ensure peaceful elections in 2026.

Alfred Futuyo Karaba, SPLM-IO’s Chairperson in Western Equatoria and Governor of the state, directed the new leaders to prioritize the party’s interests.

He warned that any official who fails to meet expectations will be replaced by more capable individuals. “Be ready to assume any position at the national or state assembly and set an example with your actions,” he stated.

Commissioner Rubben Amaai of Mvolo County, speaking on behalf of the ten-county chairpersons, called on his colleagues to create political space for all signatories to the peace agreement, as outlined in the state capital.

He urged the state secretariat to expedite the official launching of SPLM-IO in the counties and reaffirmed their readiness to support party mobilization at the grassroots level.

The restructuring follows a three-day SPLM-IO training program on the party’s key documents.

Earlier in May, the ruling SPLM party established a training school in Western Equatoria for its members which was witnessed by South Sudan Vice President James Wani Igga who is also the First Deputy Chairperson of the ruling party.
