President Kiir tasks New Chair of Economic Cluster to transform nation’s economy

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has officially sworn in two new Vice Presidents, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel for the Economic Cluster and Josephine Lagu for the Service Cluster, in a ceremony that marks a significant step in South Sudan’s efforts to improve governance and advance its economic agenda.

In his address, President Kiir acknowledged the severe economic challenges facing the country and tasked Vice President Dr. Bol Mel with spearheading a transformative approach to the nation’s economy. He emphasized the importance of diversifying the economy, with a strong focus on agriculture, to address food security and create sustainable economic growth.

Vice President Bol Mel, who was appointed to lead the Economic Cluster, expressed his deep gratitude for the trust placed in him. He pledged to serve with unwavering loyalty, commitment, and integrity. “I am determined to work tirelessly to advance our economic agenda and ensure South Sudan’s prosperity,” he stated. “My focus will be on building a resilient economy that benefits all citizens, without fear or failure.”

Josephine Lagu, sworn in as Vice President for the Service Cluster, represents the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA). 

In her speech, she expressed sincere appreciation to President Kiir for the opportunity to serve the nation. “I will not let down the people of South Sudan,” she affirmed. Lagu also underscored the shared responsibility of both the government and citizens in improving the delivery of essential services and raising living standards across the country.

The ceremony signals a hopeful new chapter for South Sudan as the country continues its journey toward better governance, sustainable development, and a brighter future for its people.
