The Presidency has urged the swift conclusion of the Tumaini [Hope] talks in Nairobi, emphasizing their critical importance for resolving South Sudan’s political deadlock. The ongoing negotiations between the government and opposition holdout groups aim to forge a path toward lasting peace and stability in the nation.
The country’s top political leaders underscored the urgency of reaching a comprehensive agreement, noting that political stability and economic reforms are essential for South Sudan’s recovery, especially as it gears up for its first democratic elections since independence.
Presidential Advisor on Security Affairs, Tut Gatluak Manime, stressed the need for unity among all political parties in addressing the nation’s challenges. “The meeting highlighted the importance of negotiators approaching the talks with an open mind and a firm commitment to durable peace, which will pave the way for the reforms our nation desperately needs,” Tut said.
Echoing this sentiment, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to resolving the political conflict inclusively. “The government remains committed to ensuring that all voices are heard and that no party is left behind in the discussions,” Lomuro stated.
To accelerate the process, President Salva Kiir has appointed a 15-member negotiating team, led by Senior Presidential Advisor Kuol Manyang Juuk. The team has been tasked with engaging opposition holdout groups to secure a political settlement that addresses the nation’s instability.
