South Sudan Election 2026

A political analyst from the University of Bahr el Ghazal, Wau, has highlighted significant challenges facing the upcoming 2026 general elections in South Sudan.

Lecturer Joseph Lual Dario noted that the extended transitional period presents both internal and external obstacles that could jeopardize the credibility of the elections.

Dario stressed the urgent need for the government to implement the Revitalized Peace Agreement fully, warning that failure to do so could threaten the election process. He pointed out that focusing on the pre-election requirements, including addressing the worsening economic crisis, is essential to ensure a peaceful and free election.

“The government must be united and committed to implementing the peace agreement if we are to have a credible election in 2026. The challenges are real, but they are not insurmountable if addressed with seriousness.”

Dario emphasized that a successful election requires unity within the government, as well as progress in areas like security and economic stability. “The time to act is now; if the government does not make progress in the next year, the election may face serious challenges.”
