The Inspector General of Police, Gen. Atem Marol Biar, has called on the country’s police force to carry out their duties with diligence and professionalism.

During a recent visit to the Directorate of Border Police, Gen. Atem emphasized the critical role of training in transforming the police into a more professional force.

The visit aimed to assess the general working conditions within the Directorate, highlighting the need for improvements and reforms.

Gen. Atem underscored the importance of continuous training, describing it as a fundamental tool for enhancing the professionalism and effectiveness of the police force. “Training is not just a necessity; it is a vital component in building a competent and professional police force that can effectively serve and protect the citizens of South Sudan,” he said.

In addition to stressing the importance of training, Gen. Atem pledged to reclaim police land that has been unlawfully occupied by illegal tenants.

“We will ensure that all properties belonging to the police are returned and utilized for their intended purposes,” he assured, reflecting a commitment to strengthening the resources and infrastructure available to the police force.

During the visit, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) for Border Police, Lt. Gen. Dr. Olaw Adiang Nyijok, highlighted several challenges currently facing the Directorate.

Among these, he emphasized the issue of inadequate space and the lack of mobility, which hamper the Directorate’s ability to perform its duties effectively. “We are faced with significant logistical challenges that impede our operations.

There is a dire need for more space and better mobility solutions to enhance our operational capabilities,” Lt. Gen. Nyijok stated.

The discussions during the visit pointed to a shared understanding of the need for reforms and support to address the challenges faced by the border police. With a focus on training, resource allocation, and the reclaiming of occupied police land, the leadership expressed hope for a more effective and professional police force in the near future.

As South Sudan continues to navigate complex security challenges, the commitment of its police leadership to enhancing professionalism and addressing operational obstacles marks a critical step toward ensuring stability and safety within the country’s borders.
