Nimule town in Eastern Equatoria State has officially been upgraded to a municipality, following a long-anticipated decision. The upgrade, which was first proposed in August 2013, is part of a broader state initiative that also includes Torit and Kapoeta.
On May 2, 2025, new mayors were appointed for all three municipal councils.Speaking to Radio Emmanuel, David Eriga, former Town Clerk of Nimule, said the local community—including chiefs, elders, women, and youth—has warmly welcomed the development.
“We held a meeting with all stakeholders and formed a committee to prepare for the mayor’s reception. People have wholeheartedly embraced this change. It’s something we’ve been longing for,” said Eriga.
“People welcomed the upgrade of Nimule to a municipality. We’re eager to see growth, and it will require more staff and offices. The committee we formed is already working on preparations for the mayor’s reception,” Eriga added.
He explained that the new municipal status brings expanded authority and responsibilities, particularly in urban planning and service delivery.
“A municipality is primarily an urban center. With 60% of activities focused on business and 40% on agriculture, the upgrade brings more power and responsibility, especially in areas like land demarcation and road planning. This is crucial for security and service provision,” Eriga noted.
With the elevation to municipality status, Nimule is expected to undergo significant development, enhancing governance and public services for its growing population.
