Gen. Akec Tong Aleu was officially sworn in on Thursday [October 3rd, 2024] as the new Director General of the Internal Security Bureau within South Sudan’s National Security Service (NSS). In his new role, Aleu is expected to address the country’s pressing internal security challenges.
President Salva Kiir, during the swearing-in ceremony, expressed his full support for Aleu, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability and security in South Sudan. The president called on Aleu to focus on resolving issues that pose threats to the nation’s internal security.
“You need to resolve all the problems affecting internal security. We won’t throw you into the job without supporting you. Some people may criticize you but don’t focus on them. Stay committed to your work,” President Kiir said.
The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Chol Thon Balok, also expressed confidence in Aleu’s ability to lead the security bureau with excellence and dedication. He highlighted the critical nature of security work for the nation.
“I won’t congratulate you now, but I believe God will be with you, and we are behind you in this mission. The security sector faces numerous challenges—security, political, and economic issues—that require strong commitment. We expect success from you,” Hon. Balok stated.
Gen. Aleu succeeds Gen. Akol Koor Kuc, who has been appointed Governor of Warrap State. The leadership change is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve governance and strengthen leadership at both national and state levels.
