The Chief Justice Dr. Baak pledged to tackle the sector’s mounting challenges head-on, starting with the resolution of longstanding pending cases. He called on the government to provide stronger institutional support to enable meaningful reforms.

On Monday the new Chief Dr. Benjamin Baak Deng Bol was swears in alongside his deputy as South Sudan’s new Chief Justice, signaling the start of a new chapter for the country’s judiciary. Observers say the appointments, coupled with the President’s strong message, may mark a turning point in South Sudan’s pursuit of a credible and functional justice system.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit described the judiciary as the “foundation of justice and stability in any nation,” stressing the urgent need for an effective and independent legal system to promote peace and national development.

Highlighting a series of challenges—including prolonged court delays, limited access to justice in rural areas, and weak enforcement of court decisions—the President called for comprehensive reforms to restore public trust in the judiciary.

“The judiciary must remain independent, free from political interference, and committed to justice for all,” Kiir stated. He urged the new leadership to clear the backlog of cases, uphold transparency and accountability, and ensure timely delivery of justice.

The President also emphasized the need for improved working conditions within the judiciary, including regular salary payments, anti-corruption measures, and enhanced moral and ethical training for judicial officers.
