On Saturday, November 2, 2024, a devastating lightning strike killed 14 South Sudanese refugees and left five others critically injured in the Palabek Refugee Settlement Camp, Zone 8, Block 2, in Lamwo District, Northern Uganda. The incident has left the community in shock as families and friends mourn the tragic loss of life.

According to local reports, the lightning struck during a church service in the settlement, where many refugees had gathered. Most of the deceased were members of the Nuer ethnic group from South Sudan, who sought refuge in Uganda due to ongoing conflicts in their home country.

Emergency responders transported the five injured survivors to Paluda Health Center III within the settlement, where they are receiving treatment in critical condition.

Community leaders and humanitarian organizations are providing support to the grieving families. The bodies of the 14 victims were laid to rest on Sunday, November 3, 2024, in a communal burial ceremony held in Palabek Refugee Settlement Camp’s Zone 8, Block 4.

The incident has raised concerns about safety in refugee camps, where extreme weather events can have devastating impacts on vulnerable communities.

Efforts to improve safety and preparedness against natural disasters are now being prioritized within the refugee settlement, as this is not the first lightning incident in the region.

Local authorities and aid organizations are exploring ways to provide lightning protection and better shelter for refugees in the camp to prevent future tragedies.
