President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reappointed Joseph Nguen Monytuil as Governor of Unity State, replacing Riek Bim Top in a move that has drawn mixed reactions across the country.
The decision comes shortly after the outgoing governor, Justice Riek Bim Top, visited Leer County, where he presided over the launch of a Mobile Court aimed at improving access to justice in remote areas. Communities from Leer and Mayendit County turned out in large numbers to the event, dressed in vibrant yellow and green. The celebrations featured traditional dances, symbolizing peace, unity, and harmony across southern Unity State.
In a swift response following his removal, Justice Riek Bim Top issued a letter expressing appreciation to President Kiir for the opportunity to serve.
Meanwhile, the reappointment of Dr. Monytuil has triggered both jubilation and criticism. In Juba, his supporters gathered at his residence, celebrating late into the night and describing his return as an opportunity to improve service delivery and stability in the state.
However, critics have voiced concern over his comeback, citing allegations linked to his previous tenure. Some community members fear a repeat of past violence, including incidents involving armed groups and the killing of officials, among them a commissioner from Mayom County.
Unity State remains one of South Sudan’s key oil-producing regions, with five percent of oil revenue earmarked for development. Observers say the leadership change could have significant implications for governance, security, and resource management in the state.
As reactions continue to unfold, attention now turns to how the newly reappointed governor will address both the expectations of his supporters and the concerns raised by critics.
