The International Organization for Migration (IOM) continues to provide vital water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Bentiu, focusing on vulnerable groups such as women, children, and people with disabilities affected by conflict and climate disasters.
Since early 2024, IOM has been the sole provider of WASH services for the entire Bentiu IDP Camp, serving around 140,000 individuals. Each month, the organization supplies 64 million liters of safe water, maintains 3,000 sanitation facilities, treats 2 million liters of waste, and collects 1,300 tons of solid waste. Additionally, IOM distributes soap and reusable sanitary pads to vulnerable groups.
“IOM remains committed to providing clean water and empowering communities to manage their resources,” said Adkins Aaron Michael, IOM’s South Sudan Emergency Coordinator.
As part of its resilience strategy, IOM is piloting a project to enhance self-reliance by training local authorities and communities to manage WASH infrastructure. This initiative is set to expand in 2025, alongside new water supply projects in Bentiu and Rubkona.
IOM’s WASH interventions are funded by USAID, the UK’s FCDO, and the European Union.
