In a heartwarming gesture of environmental stewardship, a local farmer from Yambio, Western Equatoria State, has donated 12 Maugon seeds to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio, Barani Edwardo Hiboro Kussala.
Mr. Anthony Zeit Martin, the generous farmer, explained his motivation in an exclusive interview, emphasizing the importance of tree planting in combating deforestation and promoting environmental sustainability.
“Investing in tree plantation is part of my effort to restore natural habitats, reduce carbon footprints, and promote biodiversity in Western Equatoria State,” Martin shared.
He further highlighted how this initiative could serve as a sustainable source of income for local communities while contributing to broader environmental conservation efforts.
Martin, sharing the cultural significance behind his act, added, “This is my first harvest, and our ancestors taught us to offer the first yield to the elders. I decided to give it to a man of God as a sign of respect and gratitude.”
Bishop Barani Edwardo Hiboro Kussala, while expressing his gratitude, stressed the importance of such initiatives for both the Azande Kingdom and South Sudan.
“Planting trees is vital for our communities. They provide medicine, and building materials, attract rainfall, and sustain our agricultural environment,” he said, urging other farmers to follow Martin’s example.
The Bishop blessed Martin and vowed to lead by example by planting the donated seeds. He also committed to encouraging farmers across South Sudan and Western Equatoria to engage in tree planting efforts, recognizing the far-reaching benefits for the environment and local livelihoods.
