
Regional leaders convened virtually for the 43rd Extraordinary Summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to discuss the escalating political and security situation in South Sudan.
The meeting focused on the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, de-escalation of tensions, and efforts to stabilize the country.
IGAD reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue and ensuring lasting peace in South Sudan. While the official communique is yet to be released, the summit comes at a critical time as the country faces rising instability.
Tensions have escalated following clashes in Nasir, where an SSPDF force commander and several officers were killed. In Juba, reports indicate a wave of arrests targeting opposition politicians, while First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar is reportedly under surveillance.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Ugandan soldiers reportedly entered South Sudan, with Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces stating their presence aims to protect government interests. The situation remains fluid as regional leaders seek solutions to prevent further deterioration.
