The IGAD Ambassadors in Juba have expressed deep concern over the escalating armed violence in Upper Nile State and are urging the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) to take immediate action to restore stability.
The ambassadors are particularly alarmed by reports of rising tensions and armed clashes in Nasir County, which risk undermining the progress made in implementing the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) and worsening the humanitarian crisis in the region.
In their statement, the IGAD envoys called on all parties and their affiliated groups to cease hostilities and exercise maximum restraint. They emphasized the need to uphold the Permanent Ceasefire and remain committed to the provisions of the R-ARCSS.
The ambassadors welcomed the recent Presidency meeting and its outcomes and encouraged continued dialogue and consultations within the framework of the peace agreement.
Reaffirming their commitment, the IGAD representatives pledged to continue supporting the peace process and standing with the people of South Sudan during the extended Transitional Period.
On Tuesday, armed youth seized an SSPDF barrack in Nasir, leading to the arrest of senior SPLM-IO officials, including Minister of Petroleum Hon. Puot Kang Chuol and General Gabriel Duop Lam, Acting Chief of Staff of SPLA-IO. The motive behind their arrests remains unclear.
