The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Ramadan Mohammed Abdallah Goc, officially received the credentials of H.E. Msgr. Seamus Patrick Horgan, the newly designated Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See-Vatican to South Sudan.


During the meeting, Hon. Goc expressed his deep appreciation for the longstanding contributions of the Catholic Church to the South Sudanese people, dating back to 1972.

He highlighted the essential services provided by the Church, particularly in the critical areas of education and healthcare, which have had a profound impact on the country’s development and social well-being.

“The Catholic Church has played a vital role in shaping the lives of South Sudanese citizens, especially in education and healthcare,

” Hon. Goc stated. “Since 1972, the Church has been a cornerstone in providing education and training to many of our doctors, pastors, and teachers. Their commitment has not only educated our people but has also fostered a spirit of service and dedication to the nation.”

Hon. Goc also acknowledged the positive and enduring partnership between the Catholic Church and the government of South Sudan. 

He noted that the Church’s contributions extend beyond education and healthcare, touching on various aspects of social and community development, thereby reinforcing the nation’s growth and stability.

On his part, H.E. Msgr. Seamus Patrick Horgan expressed gratitude to the government and people of South Sudan for the warm welcome and the continued cooperation that the Catholic Church has enjoyed over the years. 

“The Catholic Church has always felt at home in South Sudan, thanks to the unwavering support and cooperation from both the government and the people,” Msgr. Horgan said. 

“Serving God’s people in South Sudan is a blessing to us as representatives of the Holy See. We remain committed to our mission of service, love, and compassion.”

Msgr. Horgan reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to supporting the South Sudanese people through continued collaboration in various humanitarian and development initiatives. He emphasized that the Catholic Church would continue to focus on providing essential services, fostering peace, and promoting human dignity in South Sudan, especially during these challenging times.

The exchange of credentials marks a strengthening of the diplomatic ties between South Sudan and the Vatican. 

The Apostolic Nuncio arrived in Juba on Thursday, he will be the first Resident Ambassador of Vatican to South Sudan.
