South Sudan’s government spokesperson and Minister of Information, Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth, addressed journalists on Tuesday regarding the security situation in Juba, following growing public concerns due to recent fighting in Nasir. The minister sought to reassure the public about the government’s commitment to maintaining stability in the capital.
Hon. Makuei responded to questions about the heightened fear among Juba residents and the heavy security deployment in the city. He emphasized that the government’s actions were aimed at ensuring public safety and boosting the confidence of residents, particularly those who were contemplating leaving the city due to safety concerns.
“People in Juba have always lived with a certain level of fear, but it’s important to ask why people are panicking. How many times have we seen people running just because they see others running? This is more of a psychological issue. They are constantly in a state of anxiety,” Hon. Makuei explained.
The minister further addressed concerns regarding the recent arrests of senior SPLM-IO officials in Juba, including Minister of Petroleum Hon. Puot Kang Chuol. “They were arrested because they were in conflict with the law,” Hon. Makuei stated, emphasizing that the government’s actions were in line with legal procedures.
In his briefing, Makuei also accused the SPLM-IO of collaborating with the White Army, a militia group, and claimed that the SPLM-IO had denied such allegations. “The government has always been committed to the implementation of the peace agreement. We will not allow the country to return to war,” he affirmed.
Furthermore, Hon. Makuei called on the SPLM-IO to engage with the White Army and ensure their immediate withdrawal from the SSPDF barracks. “For the peaceful implementation of the agreement, it is crucial that all parties honor their commitments and work together to maintain peace,” he stressed.
The government’s statements come at a time when tensions are high in the country, with security forces deployed in various parts of Juba. However, authorities are hopeful that these measures will reassure residents and prevent further panic in the capital.
