Reflecting on his unique experience during Pope Francis’ historic visit to South Sudan, Fr. John Loboka Morris, the Pontiff’s official translator during the 2023 Apostolic Journey, has described the late Pope as a deeply humble and devout servant of God.

Fr. Loboka, a priest of the Apostles of Jesus Missionary Institute, had the rare privilege of translating from Italian to local languages during the Pope’s visit to South Sudan, which took place from February 3 to 5, 2023.

The pilgrimage—undertaken in unity with the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland—was a significant peace mission to the world’s youngest nation.

Speaking to The Radio Community, Fr. Loboka shared that being the Pope’s translator was an honor he will forever treasure.

“We’ve always heard about his humility and approachability,” he said. “But witnessing it firsthand was life changing. He was a man of prayer who trusted completely in God’s providence—even during his time in South Sudan.”

Fr. Loboka added that Pope Francis exuded sincerity and compassion throughout his mission, demonstrating true leadership grounded in faith and simplicity.

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City. His death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, at 9:45 a.m. local time.

The Pope had been hospitalized on February 14 due to bronchitis, later diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. After 38 days in the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital, he returned home for recovery but succumbed to illness shortly after.

His body now lies in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, where thousands are expected to pay their final respects before his funeral on Saturday.
