Tensions are rising ahead of the highly anticipated court hearing of South Sudan’s suspended First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon, scheduled for Monday, September 22, 2025.
Machar and several of his loyalists are expected to appear in court over the Nasir conflict case, marking a critical moment in the country’s ongoing political and judicial developments.
However, urgent security alerts have surfaced, with Machar loyalists expressing deep concern over a reported assassination threat targeting the suspected country First Vice president.
The source warned that the plan may involve orchestrated skirmishes or gunfire during the court session, with the intention of creating chaos that could lead to an assassination attempt on Dr. Machar.
Given the gravity of the threat, several senior members within Machar’s circle are urging that he does not attend the hearing in person. Instead, they recommend that he be represented by his legal team to minimize the risk to his life.
Security agencies have not yet issued an official statement on the matter, but the allegations are already causing heightened anxiety and increased calls for tighter security around the court and throughout Juba.
The upcoming hearing will be the first in a series of legal proceedings involving Dr. Machar and seven other political detainees, marking a pivotal chapter in South Sudan’s fragile political landscape.
Earlier today, Machar’s legal team expressed their readiness for the upcoming trial scheduled for Monday.
