South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, has launched a new initiative focused on promoting peace and stability in Nasir County, Upper Nile State.

This effort is being led in collaboration with members of the National Transitional Legislative Assembly (TNLA) from Nasir County, who represent all parties to the revitalized peace agreement.

Key discussions during the initiative centered around recent violent clashes between armed civilians and the South Sudan People’s Defence Force (SSPDF), as well as broader issues impacting peace and security in the community.

Dr. Machar reaffirmed his commitment to the initiative, emphasizing the critical need for peace and reconciliation among local communities. He highlighted that achieving lasting stability requires cooperative efforts from all stakeholders.

Following the meeting, Hon. Lidia John Jock briefed the media, reiterating that the primary goal was to find a permanent solution to the recurring violence and other challenges facing Nasir County.

She assured that ongoing discussions would continue, including further engagement with the president to advance initiatives aimed at establishing sustainable peace in the region.

Hon. Jock also emphasized the importance of national parliamentary members supporting H.E. James Odhok, Governor of Upper Nile State, who is currently on the ground leading peace initiatives in the area. She urged lawmakers to actively participate in efforts to bridge divides between communities and armed groups.

The meeting was also attended by Hon. Puot Kang Chol, Minister of Petroleum, who is originally from Nasir County, lending further weight to the importance of local leadership in the peace process.
