The office of Prof. James Wani Igga, Former Vice President and Chairman of the Economic Cluster, has clarified that he remains the First Deputy Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM). The statement dismissed rumors circulating on social media regarding his appointment as SPLM Secretary General, stating that no official announcement has been made.

According to the press statement, Prof. Igga has accepted his removal from the Vice Presidency as a normal government restructuring process, emphasizing that President Salva Kiir Mayardit is exercising his constitutional duties.

“The appointment and positions within the party are not about demotion or promotion but rather about party discipline and obedience as a trained political cadre,” the statement read.

It further noted that Prof. Igga is the SPLM 1st Deputy Chairman and SPLM Secretary General Designate, and an official announcement will be made once the SPLM leadership convenes.

The office urged the public to disregard unverified social media reports, labeling them as false and an attempt to create division and hatred.

This development follows widespread reports on social media suggesting that Dr. Igga declined the position of Secretary-General after being removed from his role as Vice President and appointed to a new position within the party.

In contrast, former Vice President Wani was not removed from his position as First Deputy Chairman of the ruling party. However, President Salva Kiir dismissed Wani this week as Vice President, appointing Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel as Vice President and Chair of the Economic Cluster in the Unity Government.
