Catholic priest who is the Peace and Justice Coordinator for the Sudan and South Sudan Bishops’ Conference, is urging for unity to overcome failure and division.
Speaking at the Bishops’ Conference devotion in Juba on Monday, Father Opi emphasized that even small divisions can lead to significant consequences, both within families and across the nation.
“Even in families, children sometimes come to you, asking, ‘Father, why do you love the other one and not me?’ That is the beginning of disunity,” he said. “If we recognize these issues, let us bring them before God and work toward building unity, cohesion, and harmony, so that we can achieve the same objectives together.”
Father Opi also pointed out that minor actions, such as the praise of one individual over another, could cause unnecessary division.
“We need to reflect on our lives,” he said. “Are we united, or are we divided? What are the things in our lives that cause us to turn against one another?”
In his reflection on the biblical reading, Father Opi highlighted the role of Jesus as a mediator, who came to Earth to repair the divisions among believers.
“When we feel burdened by our human weaknesses, we can turn to Jesus,” Father Opi explained. “We can say to Him, ‘I struggle with gossip. I accuse others. I always want the best for myself.’ Jesus will take our struggles and present them to God, helping us find reconciliation and peace.”
Father Opi’s message was clear: unity is not just a goal, but a necessity, both for individuals and for the wider community. By seeking peace with one another and with God, he believes that lasting harmony can be achieved.
