The African Union high-level delegation has arrived in Juba to press the Government of South Sudan on the implementation of key peace resolutions, including the release of detained opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar.

The delegation, led by former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete—currently serving as the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea—touched down at Juba International Airport earlier this week.

Upon arrival, the team was received by Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, South Sudan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The visit follows African Union resolutions adopted in March this year, which emphasize confidence-building measures among South Sudan’s political leaders. Central to these demands is the release of political detainees, including Dr. Machar, seen as critical to reviving the stalled peace process.

During the visit, the delegation is expected to hold high-level talks with government officials on the AU-led peace initiative, focusing on restoring dialogue and creating a conducive environment for national reconciliation.

Discussions will also cover South Sudan’s participation in the upcoming Pretoria conference later this month, widely viewed as a crucial step toward revitalizing the country’s fragile peace roadmap.

The African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan (C5) is mandated to facilitate dialogue and bridge divisions among political leaders, amid rising tensions fueled by the detention of opposition figures and ongoing internal conflicts.

The visit comes at a time of increasing regional and international pressure on South Sudan’s leadership to fully implement peace agreements and secure lasting stability in the country.
